What to Expect...

The following model provides an ideal staged approach to educational psychology involvement (in correlation with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014) 'Assess-Plan-Do-Review' Cycle. However in reality, an initial consultation is not always possible prior to an assessment. Furthermore, it is often the case that parents or teaching staff have a clear outline of the type of information they are seeking from the educational psychologist’s involvement, such as ‘clarification of the child’s learning profile’ or ‘a better understanding of the child’s social and emotional development’. With this in mind, this price guide offers an indication of the types of packages that are typically requested.

The Assessment Process

Explanation

  • Consultation involves sitting down as a group to identify specific needs e.g. family members, school staff, other professionals. I will use my knowledge, skills and experience of psychological theories and perspectives to facilitate thinking and enable problem-solving.

  • Individual assessments will take place one-to-one in a quiet room and last from 30 mins - over 2 hours. Most follow a puzzle, game-based or questionnaire format, either as:

    • a psychometric assessment - a formal, structured assessment to measure a child's cognitive ability, which can take up to 2 and a half hours and provides standardised scores of ability

    • a dynamic assessment - a flexible and interactive assessment that can be used diagnostically to provide information about how a child learns and which teaching tools can be best employed to facilitate their thinking

    • a social, emotional or mental health assessment – usually in the form of questionnaires which help to explore a child’s emotional and social well-being

  • Observation takes places in class or educational setting and lasts 30-60 mins. I will sit quietly in the corner and may talk to a range of students about their work. Where possible, I will present myself as a ‘visitor’ to the classroom and the target student will be unaware that my presence is related to them.
